Botox vs. Dysport: What’s the Difference (and Which One’s Right for You?)

When it comes to smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles, Botox and Dysport are two of the most popular options—but what’s the difference between them? And how do you know which one is best for you?

At VeVe Medspa, we offer both because no two faces (or skincare goals) are exactly the same. Let’s drive into what makes them different:

💉 What They Have in Common

Both Botox and Dysport are FDA-approved injectable treatments made from botulinum toxin type A. They work by temporarily relaxing targeted muscles—most commonly in areas like:

  • Forehead lines

  • Frown lines (a.k.a. "11s")

  • Crow’s feet

  • Bunny lines (horizonal lines just above the nose)

This softens the appearance of wrinkles and helps prevent new ones from forming. Results from both are temporary and typically last 3–4 months.

It’s important to understand—we’re treating the muscle, not the line. The repetitive movement of the muscle is what causes those fine lines and wrinkles to form over time. By relaxing the muscle, we reduce the motion that creates those lines, giving your skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. If you're late to the game, and you have deep lines, it can take several treatments to retrain and relax the muscles. Consistent treatments are key.

🔍 The Key Differences

1. Diffusion & Spread-Dysport spreads a little more once injected, making it great for larger treatment areas like the forehead. Botox tends to stay more localized, which is helpful for precise treatments.

2. Onset of Results-Dysport may kick in a bit faster—many clients notice results within 2–3 days, while Botox usually takes closer to 3–5 days (sometimes up to 7).

That said, full results for both Botox and Dysport are typically seen by day 14, once the muscles have fully absorbed and responded to the product. This timing allows for complete saturation and optimal smoothing of the treated area—so if you have an event coming up, plan accordingly!

3. Units & Dosage-This part confuses a lot of people: Dysport units are not equal to Botox units. It usually takes about 2.5–3 units of Dysport to equal 1 unit of Botox—but don’t worry, whether you choose Botox or Dysport, the cost comes out the same.

It still boggles my mind every time I enter inventory—but the math always checks out!

4. Personal Preference-Some people simply respond better to one over the other. We often recommend starting with one and adjusting if needed at future visits.

At VeVe, even our team has different favorites—I love Botox, while Marie and Emma both swear by Dysport. It really comes down to how your body responds and what feels best for you.

FAQs We Hear at the Front Desk

Still have questions? You’re not alone! Here are a few of the most common ones we get from clients:

  • “Can I get Botox or Dysport during lunch and go right back to work?” Yes—most treatments take under 15 minutes. We call it “Tox and Go.”

Disclaimer: If your job involves teaching Zumba or standing on your head, you'll need take the rest of the day off.

  • “Will I look frozen?” Only if that’s what you’re going for. Some clients love that super-smooth, no-movement look—and we’re here for it! Others prefer to keep a little expression. Either way, we customize your treatment to match your glow goals.

  • “Can I switch between Botox and Dysport?” Sure thing. Some clients try both before finding their favorite—it’s all about what works best for you.

👩‍⚕️ So… Which One Is Right for You?

It depends on:

  • Your treatment area

  • How quickly you want to see results

  • Your past experience (if any)

  • Your provider’s recommendation based on your muscle strength & facial anatomy

At your consultation, we’ll assess your unique goals and tailor a treatment plan that gives you the most natural, radiant results possible.
